Our Roots

School Gardens and Early Programs

Lettuce Turnip the Beet Sustainability Collective began building school gardens in 2015. Our first garden was at Young Scholars of Western PA Charter School in Baldwin Twp PA. It is here that our innovative programming was created as part of an after school/ summer day camp program in 2017. That same year we began construction on a rooftop garden space at YSMCS in McKeesport PA where we also provided quarterly in class workshops. 2018 brought new opportunities to grow our program with an in class supplemental kindergarten pilot at Mifflin Elementary School in Pittsburgh PA , our Little Sprouts program (birth-5yr), and added summer day camps to YSMCS. With the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and closing of school we revamped our programming to accommodate virtual learners with online learning and a public access television program E3 Explorers.
